How Many Times Has France Won The World Cup Champions?

France, who have won the tournament twice (1998, 2018), is the defending champions of the 2022 World Cup, which this year marks their 16th appearance at the World Cup.

Head coach Didier Deschamps wants his unit to become the third country to win consecutive titles after Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962). Can France get their third golden trophy in Qatar?

World Cup Group D- Who Are The Contenders For France?

Australia, Denmark, Tunisia

To win the World Cup from the strongest opponents around the world, France needs to do it, they have to first qualify for the knockouts by successfully negotiating with Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia in Group D.

Given the firepower in their ranks, it should not be much of trouble to wade through the group stages, before locking horns with tougher opponents down the line.

Who Will Have Coach Didier Deschamps's Approval As France Prepare To Defend Its Title In Qatar?

Goalkeepers

Hugo Lloris seems to be the number one choice of Deschamps to stand between the sticks. He is an undisputed starter at Tottenham Hotspur and, barring injury concerns, there would be no reason why he should not be on the flight to Qatar.

Mike Maignan of Milan is a fantastic keeper himself and, should Lloris fail to make it, he could be the one with the gloves in the World Cup. That does depend on his fitness, however, as Maignan is doubtful after picking up an injury, with the shot-stopper missing Milan's last couple of games.

Defenders

The Manchester United defender overstretched in attempting to make a tackle in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea and instantly pulled up. Lying on the ground in pain, Varane became emotional. His participation in the 2022 World Cup for France was surely on his mind.

Varane has been a key figure for Les Blues for years. The 29-year-old was part of the France team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and he was expected to be a central pillar of Didier Deschamps’ side that will defend its title in Qatar this winter. That might now be at risk with Varane predicted to be sidelined for a month.

However, Varane’s loss could be William Saliba’s gain. The Arsenal defender could be in line to replace Varane in the France lineup for the 2022 World Cup, capping a remarkable rise over the last 12 months. Not so long ago considered a forgotten figure at the Emirates Stadium, Saliba is now one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

Midfielders

Paul Pogba is fighting a race against time to be fit for the World Cup as he is expected to be out of action for between 40 and 60 days following surgery on a meniscus injury, with N'Golo Kante ruled out altogether due to a hamstring injury.

Deschamps still has plenty of options in midfield, but potentially missing two key players will be a reason for concern. Adrien Rabiot, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurelien Tchouameni should be among the first ones to get the nod. Both Camavinga and Tchouameni are hitting the right chords at Real Madrid and have the right temperament to shine at the World Cup.

Attackers

The attack is undoubtedly the strongest department of France. Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe, and Ousmane Dembele will be fancying their chances of starting in Qatar.

But the likes of Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, and Christopher Nkunku will all be fighting for a starting berth as well.

France's Strongest XI Predict!

Lloris should be the preferred option in goal. In defense, Deschamps seems keen on fielding a back three. That means Kounde, Varane, and Lucas Hernandez could all start.

Tchouameni should be starting in midfield alongside Camavinga, with Pavard and Theo Hernandez out wide. Up front, Mbapppe and Benzema will likely have Griezmann operating in the hole to form an attacking trident of sorts.

France XI (3-4-1-2): Lloris; Kounde, Varane, L. Hernandez; Pavard, Tchouameni, Camavinga, T. Hernandez; Griezmann; Benzema, Mbappe!
